This guided walking tour explores several prominent hospitals that treated Union, Confederate, and United States Colored Troops (USCT) alike. As you visit the actual locations of these historic medical facilities, you will learn about the difficult conditions soldiers faced— both on the battlefield and in the hospital wards. Hear fascinating stories of the men and women who worked tirelessly to care for the wounded.

Led by Civil War historian Madeline Feierstein, you will learn statistics on the number of casualties treated, the types of injuries commonly encountered, and the medical advancements made in the face of overwhelming need.Key highlights include:

  • Mansion House Hospital: One of the largest hospitals, treating thousands of soldiers during the war that was featured on PBS’s hit show “Mercy Street”

  • McVeigh House Hospital: An example of a confiscated private residence whose owner fought for compensation in court.
